Court remands 50-yr-old man, 4 others over N21m fraud

The police in Zone 5, Benin City, Edo State yesterday arraigned a 50 years old man, Christopher Sunday Jamijaye and four others at the Sapele Magistrates’ Court 2, Presided over by Chief Magistrate Mrs B Okumagba, for allegedly conspiring within themselves to defraud Ugboren community, in Sapele Local government Area of Delta State, to the tune of N21m.

Others remanded with him are, Edward Okpetsegha, Gabriel Ofrie, Ufuoma Etie and Festus Gari. They were remanded for conspiring along with Christopher Sunday Jamijaye, in a nine counts charge of defrauding the community of the above sum on the 9th of June, 2014, within the Sapele magisterial division.

In the nine count charges read to the suspects in English language and to which they consented to have properly understood, but pleaded not guilty, the suspects allegedly obtained a Sapele High Court order, said to have declared him, Christopher Sunday Jamijaye, as the authentic Chairman of the community, while the four others were declared to be his executive members.

They were further alleged to have presented the order to the Boyo road, Sapele, branch of First Bank Plc, (the community’s bankers) and subsequently withdrew the fund from the community’s Freedom to Operate (FTO) account number 2020720821, the same day they purportedly got the alleged order of the High Court.

The charges also stated that either the Base Manager of Seplat Petroleum Company Ltd, Dr Chukumah Igelenyah or the company’s Community Relations manger, was category A signatory, while the President General of the community, Chief Anthony Ayovogware or the community’s Treasure was category B signatory respectively, to the said community account said to be jointly run between the company and the community, where the suspects allegedly withdrew the fund.

The court has fixed 19th of December, 2014, for mention.
