Govt appeals to police to enforce ‘Okada ban’

By Festus Ahon, ASABA
DELTA State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Ben Igbakpa has appealed to the State command of the Nigerian Police Force to help in the enforcement of the ban on Motorcycle operations in seven local government areas of the state.

Igbakpa made the appealed when he led officials of the ministry on a courtesy visit to the new commissioner of Police, Delta State, Mr Akali Buba Usman in his office at the command headquarters in Asaba.

The Transport Commissioner told the State Police boss that despite the ban on Motorcycle operations in seven local government areas, which he named to include; Oshimili South, Warri South, Uvwie, Ethiope East, Sapele, Ika South and Ika North East, some persons still move around with motorcycles in the affected areas.

Igbakpa said aside the flag off of the ban in these areas by the state government enforcement lies heavily on security agents, but feelers from the Command was that nobody had instructed the Police to be part of the enforcement.

He therefore appealed to the Police Commissioner to do so without further delay, saying that the command should work in synergy with the ministry to succeed, even as he drew attention that most of the persons flaunting the ban order were security personnel’s.

Igbakpa restated government reasons for the ban of motorcycle operations in the seven local government areas, maintaining that the action was in line with relevant federal and state laws on traffic management as well as crime prevention.

The Transport Commissioner who handed over copies of the various Delta State Traffic Laws to the Police boss, said much was being expected from the security agents at ensuring orderliness on the roads.

Responding, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Akali Usman said signals would be sent to the affected divisions of the command to inform them of the ban and to ensure that the ban was enforced.

Usman assured that anyone caught in these areas using Motorcycle would face the law, saying that any law whether popular or not, must be enforced and all must abide by it, including security personnels.

He drew attention of the ministry to some traffic challenges in parts of the state, especially the indiscriminate parking of vehicles along major roads, stating that there were high levels of disrespect of right of way to other road users.
