Court stops Adamawa state bye-election

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA – The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from going ahead with its plans to conduct a bye-election in Adamawa State on Saturday.

In a judgment that was delivered by Justice Adeniyi Ademola, the high court, further directed that the erstwhile Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Bala James Ngilari, be immediately sworn in as the substantive Governor of the state.

The court held that Ngilari who was Deputy to the impeached Governor of the state, Admiral Murtala Nyako, did not validly resign from office, and thus, ought to have taken over the reigns of leadership in the state immediately his boss was ousted from office.
