Don’t lower your guards until you get World Cup ticket, AWC trophy, Danagogo charges Falcons

Abuja – Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo has urged the Super Falcons not to lower their guards until they have won the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket and African Women Championship (AWC).

Danagogo, who is also Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), gave the charge in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Patrick Omorodion, on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Falcons, six-times winners of the competition for the continent’s senior female national teams, lost their title in 2012, after losing 0-1 to South Africa at the same stage.

This time around, the Falcons have won all their matches in Group A, beating Cote D’Ivoire 4-2, Zambia 6-0 and hosts Namibia 2-0, garnering the maximum nine points.

A win against South Africa on Wednesday assures them of a ticket to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup of June 6 to July 5 in Canada.

It will also guarantee them a place in the Oct. 25 final match of the competition against either of Cameroon and Cote D’Ivoire and a chance for a record seventh title.

“The Falcons have shown that they are truly African champions and are ready to reclaim their title. I urge them to continue winning their matches until the World Cup ticket and the trophy is won,” Danagogo said.

He reminded the players of President Goodluck Jonathan’s promise to continue to reward deserving Nigerian athletes.

“I am ready to take them to President Jonathan to reward them for bringing honour to the country,” the Sports Minister assured.(NAN)
