Enugu guber: The search is over

BY FRANCIS Ede

Big, bold, and formidable with urbane and charming mien and baritone voice that has a likable pitch, with the name ‘gentle giant’ as a befitting sobriquet; Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is the rave of the moment, the new kid on the block in Enugu state politics.

Ever since his unanimous adoption as the consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  for the forth coming general elections in the country early next year by all the stakeholders of the party in the three Senatorial zones of the state and the expanded state caucus, his name has been on everybody’s lips.

Ugwuanyi: Consensus candidate

Ugwuanyi: Consensus candidate

It is an interesting leap of faith for both the state and the candidate, that while other states are contending with a barrage of problems arising from the question of who will succeed their incumbent governors as their tenures gradually come to an end by the month of May next year, the people of Enugu state have by that singular stroke of unanimous endorsement of Hon. Ugwuanyi resolved their own and eagerly await the election day.

A member of House of Representatives in Nigerian National Assembly, representing Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Maritime, as well as the Chairman of Enugu State Caucus of the same house. A man of tact and dignity, who has shown strident focus on anything he puts his mind to, the joy of the people know no bound as we regale in the euphoria of his choice as a successor to Governor Chime.

In the words of His Excellency, Governor Sullivan Chime who coordinated that epoch making exercise, ‘people are happy and excited about his choice. I have a good product to sell and that makes the whole thing a lot easier’.

It was indeed, a triumph of character and determination as His Excellency, the governor has said, for Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi believes like former American President, Lyndon Johnson that ‘with industry, temperance, promptness and generosity the persistent man would inevitably triumph’.

And he also believes that when success comes, it must be used to the benefit of others. In fact, fewer politicians understand the import of what is known in local parlance as ‘stomach infrastructure’, better than he does and fewer have worked so hard to assuage the hunger among the local populace than him.

‘Now is the summer of our happiness and things have falling for us in pleasant places’, says Barrister Eugene Edeoga, who also had kind words for the over 13 other eminent governorship aspirants from Enugu North Zone who willingly stepped down for Hon. Hon. Ugwuanyi, saying that ‘this is the spirit with which true brotherhood is forged’. He called for all hands on the deck, since it is only one person that can be governor at a time.

While Chukus Ugwu, also a lawyer, believes that ‘Hon. Ugwuanyi’s emergence and popularity is dependent upon his service to the community, and his accessibility, an indispensible attribute for any leader who wants to earn the love of his people’. He said that ‘Gburugburu is industrious, upright and thoroughly an honest man,
