Groups want more women participation in politics

By Olayinka Latona

LAGOS—AHEAD of the 2015 general elections, Women Advocacy Research Documentation Centre, WARDC, Voices for Change, and UKaid, have advocated for more involvement of women in politics and leadership positions.

Speaking at a one-day consensus building workshop on “Advancing Women in Political participation” the Executive Director of WARDC, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, urged political party leaders in the country to give women more leverage in leadership positions.

She said: “Women have contributed tremendously to the growth of party politics and governance of Nigeria, yet, their representation in decision making organs of political parties and public offices fall far below the universally accepted 30 per cent threshold of affirmative action.

“We need more women leaders because when women lead side by side with men; it is good for equality and democracy, peace and stability. When men and women in leadership both took decision, such decision better reflects and respond to the diverse needs and right of the entire population.”
