Ebonyi: Are the hawks now after Elechi?

After massively losing out in the bid to pave way for his chosen successor, there is apprehension that political enemies of Governor Martins Elechi could now come after him.

By Peter Okutu

THE rumoured plans to impeach Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State by the State House of Assembly was in the eyes of some a fluke. Those saying so insist that the peace and stability of the state remains unshakable.

But the signs are indeed ominous given the increasing empowerment of the governor’s political foes. In the latest development, the speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku was last Wednesday returned to office following the ruling of a court.

The judgment nullified the November 10 2014 purported impeachment of the speaker by thirteen members of the House in a hotel in Abakaliki.

In his ruling, Justice Anslem Nwigwe asserted that the sitting of Ebonyi State House of Assembly can only take place in the chambers of the house and that the speaker can only be removed from office by two third majority of the members.

The speaker who had at one time been a close ally of the governor subsequently fell out with him after the governor unilaterally picked erstwhile minister of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu as his successor.

Fazed by the development supporters of the governor masterminded the impeachment of Nwazunku using 13 members of the House of Assembly in a hotel, Top View Hotel, Abakaliki. The 13 members were short of the 16 required to form the two-third majority required to push through an impeachment in the opinion of the court. The court also ruled that the sitting outside the chambers was illegal.

The reversal of the impeachment and the sitting yesterday was alleged to have raised concern in the camp of the governor that the speaker and his allies was aiming for retribution.

This was because members of the House loyal to the speaker are more in number compared to those in the Governor’s camp.

Vanguard gathered that the alleged plot to impeach the governor was to give way to the speaker to become Acting Governor of the State while the Deputy Governor would resign his position to face his electioneering campaigns.

However, such permutations were laid to rest last weekend when the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Deputy Governor of the State, Engr. Dave Umahi debunked the insinuation in some quarters that some members of the State House of Assembly were plotting to impeach the State Governor, Chief Martin Elechi.

Umahi gave the revelation during the 25th anniversary of Folk Technical College Alike Ikwo LGA.

According to him, nobody will impeach Governor Martin Elechi because he will finish his tenure.

“Nobody will impeach the leader of the state. He will finish his tenure; whether my Governor supports me or not I will still love him; he fought for the creation of the State.

“Anyone fighting this mandate is fighting God; all the candidates of PDP will be returned; our vision is in line with what God gave to us; God has ordained it; it is time for enjoyment and not labour.”

Yesterday, when the House resumed, both camps clashed briefly, but nothing else. At least for now.
