Former Iwuanyawu Nationale and Enyimba coach tony Ukeachu has expressed fears that the impact created by young players in the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea poses a serious danger to the future of Nigerian football.
“Though, I am happy at the number of youthful players paraded by teams at 2015 Afcon, I fear this could spell doom for Nigerian football.
“The danger this poses to our football is that we would still be far behind when the qualifiers for the next tournament commence.”
He noted that the standard of play have been high, a factor acknowledged by many football fans, saying Nigeria’s absence was worrisome
“By the next Afcon, these players who are in Equatorial Guinea now would have grown to become better for their national teams. We may find ourselves struggling to qualify for the next edition. So, we must do something now as a way to ensure our campaign for the next edition does not hit the rocks as was the case in 2014.”
Ukeachu, who played for the defunct Spartans of Owerri advised the Nigeria Football Federation to name a substantive coach for the home based Eagles to ensure there is a team on standby.
