An influential African football personality, Foussena Leila Djagba has hailed the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea as a “triumph” over the deadly Ebola disease.
She was particularly thrilled by the quality of football exhibited by the teams and paid tribute to CAF President Issa Hayatou and President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea.
“Hail the visionary CAF President, Dr Issa Hayatou! Hail the Afro centric Equatorial Guinea President, His Excellency Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and his dedicated officials who made this much anticipated soccer fiesta a huge and colourful success,” Djagba said.
Although she acknowledged the unruly behaviour of some overzealous football fans of the home team, she said, “Equatorial Guinea still deserves praise for rescuing the whole continent from a monumental soccer fiasco at 11th hour.”
Above all, Djagba said, “The much feared Ebola virus which spooked Morocco and caused them to drop the ball did not show its ugly and deadly head throughout the tournament.”
In summary Djagba said, “On the field it is the Elephants but more importantly the champions off the pitch were the host Equatorial Guinea, the CAF President and his Executive Committee Members, the spectators, the media and the whole of Africa at large who contributed in diverse ways in making an historic, happy and healthy spectacle.”
