Immediate past President of the Nigerian Trawler Owners Association, NITOA, Margaret Orakwusi, has said that the country was losing huge foreign exchange as well as employment opportunities for youths to fish poaching and piracy attacks on fishing trawlers operating in the country.
Orakwusi told Vanguard in Lagos, that the persistent pirate attacks had forced a lot of indigenous operators out of the business.
She noted that the number of companies operating in the sector in 2005/06 were about 39, adding that the number had reduced to nine in 2014.
“Fish trawling is a capital intensive project and fish trawling also brings the much needed foreign exchange. There was a time the industry ranked second to the oil industry in foreign exchange earnings. I will like to see us go back to that period.”
