Group warns elders to stop debasing Urhobo nation

By Onozure Dania

Lagos—A socio-cultural organization, Urhobo-ovo, has decried what it called the degrading manner, the Urhobo are being dragged into the murky waters of Nigerian politics by some Urhobo elders. It, therefore, advised them to desist from the debasing attitude before they incur the wrath of true sons and daughters of Urhoboland.

The group, according to its spoke person, Jesukri Imoni in a statement, said it was worried about the tussle in Delta State over who becomes the governor in the next political dispensation which has become more tribalistic, instead of developmental issues that would take the state to greater heights.

He said: “It is a shame that in 2015 Urhobo elders are still tearing themselves apart over who will be the next governor of Delta State and what tribe he should come from, instead of thinking of how to move the Urhobo nation forward.

“It is noteworthy that the Urhobo, like many other tribes, have been marginalised for so long in the Nigerian project which has only recognized the so called three major tribes in Nigeria.”
