Christians and Muslims in the north have been urged to join forces to ensure that the leadership of the country returned to the north in the forthcoming elections
Chairman, North East Zone of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Shu’aibu Byal, made the call when members of Arewa Citizens Action for Change (ACAC), paid him a courtesy call in Bauchi on Wednesday.
He said, “in the north, we have a challenge, our parents and great grand parents have left a bad legacy that has not helped our youths, and they have not promoted our young people.
“Today, the leadership is not in the north and we want to bring it in by whatever means possible.
“The forefathers have not put a bedrock that will move the Muslims and Christians in the region towards togetherness and I pray for the north and its unity”, Byal said.
He, however, contended that the north cannot rule itself alone as it must also partner with the south to be able to have one government for the good of the society.
The chairman said that the adherents of the two religions were tired of being used by politicians that often left them in problems, and advised the youths to avoid politicians who were out to spoil their future.
“I blame ourselves for what we have lost in the past and also blame our elites for not helping matters.”
The National Chairman of ACAC, Sadiq Ilelah, said the association, made up of Christians and Muslims, was out to promote peace and unity among adherents of the two major religions in the country.
Ilelah said there was peace between the groups in the 70s and 80s in spite of their religious and tribal differences.
He said that ACAC was out to revive relationship that existed among the people so as to see themselves as one.
Ilelah observed that lack of unity between the two groups had negatively affected the northern region resulting in poor political and socio-economic well being of the people.
“The politicians have been using religions to bring disunity among us, now we are saying with all sense of humility and respect that time has come, where we shall shun such act.”
“Gone are the days when youths were used by politicians to create problems and disturbances.’’
