Agunbiade, Iroro call for support for Motorsport

Nigerians have been called upon to support motorsport and tap into the enormous attendant economic and social benefits associated with the sport.

President of the Nigerian Automobile Sports Club of Nigeria, Abdul Agunbiade made this at a media briefing which held at the Bay Lounge in Lekki, Lagos yesterday.

The conference was centered on Nigerian motorsport youngster, Ovie Ross Iroro who is currently studying Mechanical Engineering at University College London and is also active in the sport.

Agunbiade said for the young driver to achieve his dream, Nigerians ought to rally behind him and support him in whatever way they can. He said his association would do all within its reach to support Ovie.

“We, on our part, will push him as hard as we can to see him compete in international championships and expose him to the best races in the world,” Agunbiade said.

Ovie who is the first Nigerian to compete in the British Formula Ford Championship, said he has set his sights on a higher level. He has made a smooth transition into Single Seater racing cars as part of his plan to work his way towards the highest levels of Motorsport. He wants to move to GP 3, GP 2 and ultimately Formular 1.

Ovie who represented Nigeria in South Africa in the Young Drivers Excellence Academy competition in 2012 called for sponsors to assist him achieve glory for Nigeria. “Motor racing is capital intensive.

One needs money to take care of a lot of things. The challenge of training to be fit mentally and physically for competitions is enormous,” he said, adding, “one needs funding to hire the car, the tyres, among other things.

Ovie first became attracted to Motorsport by watching the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race. In pursuit of his passion, he entered the world of racing in Lagos where he competed and went on to win the first Go-Kart championship he ever entered in December 2010.

He won Best Rookie award at Rye-House club championship 2012

He was part of the UCL BUKC rookie team and helped them to place 7th overall in the UK

Ovie was also part of the 2nd Rugby team with appearances for the 1st team at Strathallan School, Scotland and showed strong pace on Formula Ford test debut.
