Okagbare apologises to AFN

Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor has apologised to the hierarchy of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria over her statements criticising the federation’s athletes development policy. Consequently, she may be given a ‘soft landing’ with the hope she will be of good conduct in the future.

At the weekend, the African sprint champion calmed nerves frayed by her diatribe, when she ran 10.98 seconds to record the season’s fastest time at the Shanghai leg of the IAAF Diamond League series. Speaking on the development, AFN president, Solomon Ogba stated that Okagbare-Ighoteguonor’s apology has been received and the board of the AFN will take up the matter.

“Blessing is our daughter. She has erred and when your child goes wrong, you pull her ears with your left and then draw her close to you with your right hand.

“I think we have moved on from that incident and our concentration is on how to run our programs for the season,” Ogba said.

Okagbare-Ighoteguonor with her time is now the leading woman in the 100m and barring any circumstances, the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in August could be her month of glory.

It is three months to Beijing, and her rivals, may also improve. But Okagbare said yesterday, she is aiming to go faster and for once be crowned a world champion.

Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, who clocked 11.25 to finish fifth in her first 100m of the season said she is looking forward to redeem herself.

“The feeling is OK. “I am looking forward to my next race. What comes, comes.”
