2014 Int’l day of the girl child: Intel says ‘NO’ to gender inequality in IT empowerment

The current gender inequality in Information  Communication Technology, ICT, around the world, especially in developing countries has continued to attract global attention.

Experts say this development must be corrected so as to open doors for equal opportunity for women and girls.

Current statistics in Nigeria for instance, reveal that Nigerian women make up 50 per cent of the population but hold less than 20 per cent of ICT jobs in the country.

However, Intel Corporation, at the International Day of the Girl Child held in Nigeria at the weekend, drove the message home, that the girl-child must be given equal opportunity in ICT, to correct the imbalance.

Like Intel, the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson is passionate about developing technology skills among women. She is worried that Nigerian females are not exposed to technology training like their male counterparts.

So last year, Ministry of Communications Technology, reached an agreement with Huawei Technologies to train Nigerian girls in information and communications technology.

The idea according to her, aimed at encouraging females to take up interest in technology.

The Nigerian version of the international day of the girl child was organized by Woman’s Technology Empowerment Center, WTEC and supported by Intel, Oracle, Idea, and Kravex.

Speaking to about 30 girls from no fewer than seven secondary schools around Lagos at the Idea Hub, Yaba, Lagos during the celebration, Olasimbo Olatoregun of Intel in her welcome address told the gathering that there should not be limit to career in IT no matter the gender status.

She said that Intel believes that education is a fundamental right for everyone, and technology opens doors to opportunities.
