Anambra North: Joy returns

BY ANAYO OKOLI.
After dithering procrastination, Senator Joy Emodi has entered the fray thereby putting the race in Anambra North Senate contest into a fresh start. Senator Emodi’s entry into the race follows what sources claim as pressure from political and traditional leaders on her. She is contesting on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Before her entry, a number of leading political leaders had also indicated interest, but sources say that a number of constituency leaders were not comfortable with the line-up and hence the pressure on Senator Emodi who is remembered for her eventful representation of the constituency in the time she was in the Senate between 2005 and 2010.

The pressure on Emodi Vanguard learnt came mainly from stakeholders in the PDP who are afraid that some of those in the line up could make the party to not only lose the Senate seat, but also lose votes in the presidential election which is holding on the same day. “You know the National Assembly election is holding the same day as the presidential election, the failure of the party to so far find a strong candidate may lead to the opposition disgracing us in the presidential election,” one source familiar with the development revealed.

Following the way she left the Senate in 2010 and her exit from the presidency, some associates had prevailed on her not to again seek public office. The senator famously known as the Joy of the Senate during her time in the Senate, was said to have strongly resisted the pressure but subsequently caved in following the pressures that also came from outside the constituency.

Senator Emodi was said to have embarked on consultations across the zone following which she picked the form to return to the Senate.

A source from the zone who was privy to the Senator’s decision, confirmed that “we encouraged her to get the forms and contest, because we know that she is very capable and has the experience; we have tested her and she did well, we want her”. He said that some of them who are major stakeholders in the area have weighed the capacity and capability of those trying to come out to contest for the Senate in the zone and discovered that Emodi remains the best.
