The Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Dr Tammy Danagogo has predicted that Nigeria will win the FIFA World Cup soon. But that will come through the women team, the Super Falcons.
Encouraged by the excellent football exhibited by the women national team at the just-concluded Africa Women’s Championship in Namibia, Danagogo, who spoke at a reception for the players in Lagos, maintained that “female football will soon become the easiest way for Nigeria to win a major international title in football.
“I see in these girls the talent, the passion and the patriotic zeal to achieve this; they will go places.”
He recalled that the Falcons exhibited patriotism, discipline and a sense of purpose the way they went about the AWC in Namibia.
“This is a country where only those who complain get attention. These girls put the country first before personal gains. If we had this crop of athletes who are so passionate and patriotic, our sports will go places.”
Dangogo said, adding, “I am calling on every sports loving Nigerian to do everything possible to appreciate them because they went through very tough times to bring this trophy home.”
He was particularly happy that the Falcons had returned Nigeria to the pinnacle of women football in Africa. “They have proved to the world that we remain the undisputed champions of Africa.”
He said it was time corporate Nigeria identified with the Women Football League in the country so as to bring out the best in the players who are presently operating under very harsh environment.
