Meyiwa was not protecting anyone – Police

The police have revealed that Senzo Meyiwa was not protecting anyone when he was shot dead on Sunday night.

Rumours circled the media suggesting that the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was shot protecting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo after the gunmen pointed a gun at her.

The police have poured water on this saying that Meyiwa was not protecting anyone and that he was shot as he was making his way to the door.

The rumours was that captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead by intruders while trying to protect his girlfriend during a robbery at her home, officials said.

“Two guys entered the house and demanded mobile phones, money and other valuables,” provincial community safety official Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane said yesterday.
“Senzo tried to protect Kelly because one of the men had a gun pointed towards her.”
Police said two men entered Khumalo’s house at about 8pm. A third waited outside the house and all three fled immediately after the shooting.

Meyiwa’s father seeks justice

Samuel Meyiwa says a life sentence is the only punishment he will accept for his son’s death.

Speaking to DRUM Meywa said the police should make arrests soon.

When questioned about his son’s girlfriend Kelly Khumalo he said: “I don’t know at the moment, I can’t say she did it or not, I don’t know, I can’t speak on rumours.”

A visibly upset Sam Meyiwa told reporters outside his house in Umlazi, Durban, that he wanted the men who killed his son arrested as soon as possible.

“They [the police] must make sure they get these people who killed my son. I want them in jail. I want them in custody. I want to talk to them and ask them why they killed my son. It’s like they killed myself.”

President Zuma outraged

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma on Monday led a shocked nation in voicing outrage at the killing of national football captain Senzo Meyiwa after the talismanic goalkeeper was shot dead outside Johannesburg.

“Words cannot express the nation’s shock at this loss,” said Zuma, amid a national outpouring of grief.

Zuma said police must “leave no stone unturned in finding his killers” and bringing them to justice.
