ONITSHA—The Nigerian Navy has warned those without operational license to steer clear of any form of mining or dredging activities along the River Niger waterways, even as it impounded some boats and dredging equipment belonging to some members of Dredger Owners Association of Anambra State, DOAAS, for alleged unapproved activities.
The commander of Onitsha Naval Outpost, in Anambra State, Navy Captain Mike Oamen, gave the warning in his office while speaking to newsmen.
According to him, only those with operational license from the regulatory authorities such as the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA were permitted to dredge sands at the bank of the River Niger.
