Minna— Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, has backed the request by the Presidency for the extension of the emergency rule in the three north east states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, in order to totally put the menace of under control.
He was however against any move or call to dismantle the existing political structures in the affected states.
Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after being screened for his senatorial ambition at the party secretariat in Minna, the state capital yesterday, Aliyu said the request was in order and should not be based in the success or failure of the military campaign against the insurgents in the region.
“If you do not declare state of emergency, you are susceptible to human rights abuse and total condemnation by the outside world. Already, there is a misconception on declaration of emergency rule but it did not state that political structures should be dismantled. So I won’t expect this to be done.
“What we should understand is that what we are facing today in these areas is gorilla war and what we should know is that terrorists do not respect the rules. When you need to fight these people, you need to declare state of emergency,” he said.
On the his screening for the senatorial seat, the governor said that with the presentation and defence of all documents presented, he was optimistic that he would scale through the hurdle.
He said the screening of any aspirant was in order to save such a person and the party from embarrassment after the polls.
