Police order AIGs, commissioners to mop up arms, ammunition in states

By Kingsley Omonobi

ABUJA — The Police High Command has ordered all Assistant Inspectors General of Police in the 12 zones of the country and command police commissioners to carry out a mop up of all arms and ammunition available to various groups established by governors and top politicians in their states.

The order came against the backdrop of heightened political activities and preparations for a hitch-free election next.

The mop up, which has already commenced, according the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, is to ensure that in February 2015 when the election into various offices kick-starts, there is zero tolerance for operation of thugs and thuggery as well as many other issues that could derail the electoral process.

The IGP explained the arrests of thugs and mop up of arms from vigilante and political support groups in Zamfara and Imo states.

The IGP at a meeting with DIGs, AIGs and Command CPs in Abuja, said: “Hitherto, efforts were made by politicians to arm various groups especially vigilante groups for some purposes.

“But these supporters or groups sometimes, either to the knowledge of the politicians or outside their knowledge, get carried away and they use these weapons against themselves or endanger the lives of members of the Nigerian public.

“I have directed the ban on possession of illegal weapons and recovery of such arms and ammunition to the police, in view of the oncoming elections. Failure to do this will be met with severe sanctions and those who fail to heed the directive will be prosecuted.”

He commended the efforts of his officers and men ahead of the election, especially their performances in the various political events that had so far taken place across different political parties, noting that it might have played a role in the recent decision of the Police Council, headed by President Goodluck Jonathan, to confirm his appointment as substantive IGP.

The IGP used the opportunity of the meeting to launch a Police Human Rights Brochure, saying it was meant to kick-start a new dawn of ensuring the respect of human rights of citizens, even while the police officer was performing his duty.

On insinuations that the Police had been pushed aside in the fight against insurgency, the IG dismissed insinuations that it was planning to withdraw officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force from the joint security operations combating terrorism in the north-eastern part of the country.
He said the police had continually discharged itself responsibility of fighting any sort of crime, including insurgency.

  1. Military surplus ammunition is one of the most popular types of ammunition simply because the cost savings are usually pretty decent when compared to the prices offered by hunting and outdoor specialty stores and more generic large sporting stores. pistole e fucili
