Abuja – The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) has said that appropriate authorities within member countries will send a draft resolution to the UN and the AU to give legal backing for their armed forces to work together.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Mr Sanusi Abdullahi, said this on Wednesday in Abuja in an Interview with newsmen.
Abdullahi spoke on the sidelines of the meeting of Ministers of Defence, Chiefs of Defence Staff and Heads of Intelligence of the commission.
He said that the Heads of State had decided and mandated the appropriate authorities within their member countries to draft the resolution.
He said that the new focus of the commission was to get the armed forces of the member states to work together to rid the region of terrorist activities.
“The issue is that armed forces of member countries are operating within their respective territories alone and the new focus is to get them work as a team.
“Which means that the armed forces of Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria can work in Nigeria and we need the legal backing as the political backing has been given by the Heads of State at the extraordinary meeting we held in Niamey in October.
“The Heads of State had decided and mandated the appropriate authorities within their member countries to send a draft resolution to the UN Security Council and the AU to give the legal backing.
“So that these armed forces can work as a team even though they are from different counties. They can work together and go into each others’ countries to flush out insurgents and other terrorist groups,” he said.
The executive secretary said that most members of the commission were francophone countries, adding that only Nigeria was Anglophone.
“Today’s meeting is part of issues we need to address to ensure peace and security in the Lake Chad Basin and the region in general.
In his closing remarks, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, retired Lt-.Gen. Aliyu Gusau, said the outcome of the meeting would generate a new sense of support by the sub-region’s partners, especially the UN and AU.
“ We have reached out to them in our efforts to ensure that all avenues are employed to dismantle the empire of Boko Haram in our sub-region and Africa.
“I therefore implore the Headquarters of the LCBC and countries selected to liase with the UN and AU to sustain the tempo of our drive so that the best will be gotten from those noble organisations,” Gusau said.
He urged the member countries to continue to embrace the spirit of oneness that would enable them to achieve their objectives.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the member countries of the commission are: Nigeria, Chad , Cameroon , Niger republic , Central Africa and Libya.
