We’ve not endorsed any presidential candidate —SOUTH-EAST TRADERS

By Chimaobi Nwaiwu

Nnewi—After its emergency executive meeting in Onitsha yesterday, South-East Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, SEMATA, declared that it had not adopted any presidential candidate for the 2015 elections.

SEMATA, however, said it would come up with one candidate after its general meeting in January 2015 and warned the traders not to distract its business with speculations of which candidate it would support in 2015.

Executive members of SEMATA, who were at the meeting were Chief Ezenwankwo, from Anambra; Temple Udeh, Secretary-General, Enugu; Chief Christian, Nwaubani, Vice President, Abia State; Mr. Martin Iwuozor, Treasurer, Imo State; Peter Oba, Financial Secretary, Ebonyi State; Chief Gozie Akudolu, Coordinator, Anambra; Jude Osuagwu, Aba, Abia State; Domnic Offoregbu, Public Relations Officer, and Christian Kalibe, Provost, among others.

President General of the association, Chief Okwudili Ezenwanko, said the meeting and the resolution members took became imperative to avoid disaffection and destruction of the long existing peaceful association among the traders.

He said: “We are very much aware that some traders, including our SEMATA members of executive may belong to one political party or the other or may even have sympathy for some candidates running for other political positions and know that different political parties are controlling South-East states.

“We do not want them to bring issues that can cause disaffection into our association. Different political parties have their strong bases in the five South-East states.

“We have equally resolved and unanimously agreed that we will have a general meeting of all the SEMATA executive and traders on January 2015, where we will adopt the party and the presidential candidate we will support and vote for, that will protect the interest of the traders in the South-East and other part of the country who are impressed with what SEMATA is doing in the South-East and the country in general.”
