Death wish advert: Civil Society group blasts Fayose

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA – A coalition of sixty Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, in Nigeria, Tuesday, berated Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for sponsoring an advertisement they said suggested that the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Major-General Muhammad Buhari (rtd), will die in office if elected next month.

‎The group, under the aegis of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room‎, in a statement they issued in Abuja Tuesday, maintained that Governor Fayose’s advertisement was in “extreme bad taste”, saying it fell within the category of hate speech prohibited under the Electoral Act and other known international laws that forbid the publication of hate speech.

They noted that the said advert was published on the front page ‎of select newspapers on Monday January 19, with the banner headline “Nigerians Be Warned’’.

According to the Situation Room, “The advertisement negates the Abuja Accord recently signed by the presidential candidates and leaders of political parties for the elections”.

Consequently, they urged politicians to be cautious in their campaign and conduct ahead of the February polls so as to allow peace to reign in the country.

The Situation Room is made up of CSOs working in support of credible and transparent elections in Nigeria and includes such groups as PLAC, CLEEN Foundation, Action Aid Nigeria, Centre for Democracy and Development, Enough is Enough Nigeria, Wangonet, Partners forElectoral Reform, Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth & Advancement (YIAGA), Development Dynamics, Human Rights Monitor, Election Monitor, Reclaim Naija, Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, CITAD, CISLAC and  among others.
