EFCC quizzes Ebonyi commissioners, AG over LG funds

Two serving commissioners in Ebonyi State and the state Accountant General were yesterday quizzed by operatives of the Economic and Financial CrimesCommission, EFCC, for alleged graft.

The interrogation of the three took place at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.Vanguard gathered that the trio of Igbele, Accountant General; TimothyOdaa, Commissioner for Finance, and Cele Nwali, Commissioner for Localgovernment and Chieftaincy Matters, wereinterrogated for hours onallegations of corruption and financial recklessness involving localgovernment funds.

They were particularly asked to explain all they knew about the Asphalt Project earmarked for the 13 local government of the state by
the Elechi administration for which money running into millions of naira was deducted at source from the council account.
Vanguard that it was Nwali, who allegedly directed all the 13 Local Government Areas in Ebonyi State to set up Asphalt complexes in theircouncil headquarters.

It was learned that six of the councils complied while seven did not. Yet funds were deducted from the accounts of all the councils.
Nwali was also accused of being the brain behind the deduction of N1million from each of the councils to fund the production of T-shirtsfor the centenary celebration.

There was no evidence that the T-shirts were produced, while the N13 million remained unaccounted for.
