Hon Azuka Agbidi, a former stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State talks on his ambition to take up the Ndokwa/Ukwuani federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
Excerpts:
By Faith Olatide
What inspired you into the contest?
I decided to vie for this post to give my people quick and positive representation because my people have been alienated over time. Ndokwa/Ukwuani federal constituency, is an oil producing area but we have nothing to show for it.
If you look around you will see that we are lacking in areas of infrastructure development. There is nothing like empowerment, we are just so impoverished; there is nothing to show that we are an oil producing area. So I believe with my exposure, I will be able to represent my people very well.
Why the choice of Accord?
I chose Accord because people like us who really wanted to serve were not given the platform under the PDP and that is why we have gone to Accord where we know we can get the ticket to challenge whosoever we want to challenge and we are very sure that we will win because of the populace.
Why did you leave the PDP?
The reason for the influx of people from the PDP in Delta State to Accord is because people were aggrieved because the primaries were not conducted articulately, to the best of people’s knowledge.
Holding of congress
Primaries are normally conducted with delegates, and before you get delegates you must hold a congress. There was nothing like a congress. The people that were meant to be delegates were handpicked by leaders. The people were not actively represented.
If there was to be a congress, meaning people will come around to vote for those they wanted as delegates, then it would have gone a long way to bringing the desired changes in the primaries, but since people were handpicked, you now know the story. So people were aggrieved and moved over to Accord.
What makes you confident that the people will vote for you?
We are in a jet age now, and we have gone beyond party boundaries and it is individuals that matter. People are going to understand that we came from the PDP and we are people to reckon with. They are going to vote for Goodluck Jonathan, PDP for governor. When it gets to the senatorial, they are going to look for Hon. Ochei of Accord because he is a good administrator, he has been tested and everyone knows he is the right person for Delta North. When it comes to House of Representatives in my own domain, people are going to look for Accord. People are voting for individuals not party.
What do you think is your advantage in the contest?
I have an edge over my fellow contestant, reason being that the incumbent, who is flying the flag of the PDP has been there for 4 years, and before that was in the state house of assembly for 8 years. But in this whole 12 years, he has offered nothing.
It may interest you to know that I have not held any political position but I have contributed enormously to the well being of my people. I have given them scholarships, I have bought transformers, I have done a lot of MOUs because it may interest you to know that I am a facilitator as well as a consultant. I have handled consultations and facilitations between oil companies, the community and the government.
So when I am given the mandate, I will go there and drive this same MOU to any part of the community that has what it takes to benefit from it.
