2014/15 Glo League: Of shock draws, drama characterised opening day

The opening day of the season was characterized by drawn games but Ifeanyi Ubah FC recorded a good win over Warri Wolves among the four home victories of the week

Dolphins 0-0 Kwara United

It was the first match of the season played at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt. Though the game ended goalless, it was a fitting opener to the 2014/15 league season. Tunde Abdulrahman who led the Afonja Warriors to Port Harcourt would be more than happy to commence life in Ilorin with an important away point against the Pride of Rivers.

Sharks 0-0 Sunshine Stars

The Blue Angels were also held to a goalless draw at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt by the battling Akure Gunners on Saturday. It was the second of the double-header fixed by the League Management Company (LMC) in place of the initial star match, Heartland versus Kano Pillars, which couldn’t see the light of day because of the armed robbery attack on the Sai Masugida(Pillars) players and officials.

Wikki Tourists 2-0 3SC

After 183 minutes of action without any goal recorded, Wikki’s Victor Yakubu finally scored the first goal of the season in his side’s 2-0 home win over the Oluyole Warriors. He netted just after three minutes and he added the second goal in the second half of the encounter. It was poor start to life in the premier league by 3SC who had vowed to commence the season with a bang.

Giwa Fc 0-0 Abia Warriors

The Jos Elephants failed to grab maximum points at home to the Ochendo Boys in the opening day of the season. Although Abia Warriors missed the presence of their head coach, Isa Ladan Bosso who was away to London on a coaching course, battled hard against Giwa FC and they deservedly earned their point.

FC TARABA 3-2 ENUGU RANGERS

The Jalingo Boys started the new season from where they ended it last season with a home win over Enugu Rangers. It was 1-1 at halftime but the home team were awarded a penalty barely a minute into the second half. Abdulmalik Mohammed stepped up to score from the spot kick before Nura Ahmed put the icing on the cake. The Flying Antelopes threatened a fight back but it was too little too late.

BAYELSA UNITED 1-1 LOBI STARS

The Restoration Boys had to come back from a goal down to get the equalizer in the second half. It was Obioma Arinze’s first competitive goal for the Makurdi Boys but it couldn’t guarantee them an away win as they settled for a draw at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin.

IFEANYI UBA FC 2-0 WARRI WOLVES

Formerly Gabros United, Ifeanyi Uba FC created the first real upset of the new season after they defeated the Seasiders in Nnewi. They are credited with scoring the second goal of the season after Uche Onuoha fired them into a shock lead in the fourth minute before Onyekachi Nwaiwu struck in the dying minute. They are on top of the league with Wikki Tourists.

EL KANEMI WARRIORS 1-0 NASARAWA UNITED

The Borno Army started life in their new home in Kaduna with a win after they pipped the Solid Miners 1-0 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.

El Kanemi are trying to avoid the mistakes of last season where they were only fortunate to remain in the elite division.

ENYIMBA FC 0-0 AKWA UNITED

The People’s Elephant couldn’t make home advantage count against the Promise Keepers on Sunday. They were not allowed to play their game after they met a disciplined Akwa United side in Aba.

It was the kind of preparation the Aba giants least expected ahead of next weekend’s Caf Champions League first round, first leg encounter with Smouha Sporting Club of Egypt. They must redouble their effort if they want to go beyond the Arab side.
