Kaduna: PDP counts on Yero for Northern identity

By Luka Binniyat
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressive Change, APC will next Saturday finally redesign the political map of Kaduna State, after the APC made sweeping, but not surprising defeat of its major contender, the PDP, in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The March 28th Presidential election result for Kaduna state shows that the APC scored a total of 1,127, 760 votes, while the PDP got 484,085 votes.

In April, 2011, Presidential elections, Gen Muhamadu Buhari of the then Congress for Progressive Change CPC, scored 1.33 million votes, while President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP got 1.19 million votes in Kaduna state.

Last month’s total number of voters is far beyond the 3,743,815 registered voters by the close of registration in 2014. It simply means that about 2 million registered voters did not show up to vote.

The PDP, will therefore be pursuing these voters since, the largest block of the absentee voters come from traditional PDP strong holds in the state – Southern Kaduna and Southerners resident in the state.

With the PDP losing two Senatorial seats to the APC, in the state the only PDP Senator-Elect from Kaduna State, and indeed the entire North West, is Chief Danjuma Laah from Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone.

The PDP will be relying on his clout and influence to mobilise voters and ensure that he produces enough votes that will show that his victory was not a fluke.

The APC on its part, is already celebrating victory, with many PDP members in the state trooping to join the party ahead of Saturday’s gubernatorial polls between incumbent Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero of the PDP and Mallam Nasir El Rufai of the APC.

Lack of interest

According to Vanguard sources, the PDP is determined to support Yero and Laah to ensure that PDP wins so it is not extinguished from the Northwest.

But, sources close to Laah however said that it was surprising that the PDP was yet to formally contact Laah on the matter, even though Laah had on his own carried on the campaign to his zone which was getting frustrated with what looked like a lack of interest on the part of Yero to fight.

It was however said that Yero was working on the Northern and Central Zones, since he was already comfortable in Southern Kaduna.

It is believed that while Yero as a person had displayed his political naivety through his words and actions in the past two years, he had also brought close to him people of poor integrity and with little political capital. It has been said that most of the money he spent on mobilsation never reached the targeted people.

The APC for now looks comfortable, so comfortable that party officials are now screening new entrants before admitting them into the party.

With the APC set to claim all the gubernatorial seats in the seven North West states and with the Vice President, Arc. Namadi Sambo, from Zaria, Kaduna state already on his way home, Laah may be the only vestige of the biggest political party in Africa (PDP) in the North West at the national level. This humiliation is what the PDP wants to stop. But this is what the APC is tirelessly working towards
