The Nigerian Police Force, Lagos State Command, on Thursday gave hints to the public on how to be security conscious in their environment and while driving around the metropolis. The spokesperson to the command, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, gave the hints while speaking with newsmen in Ikeja.

Nwosu said the hints were to make sure the public was alert to security issues in their environment. According to Nwosu, he said any driver in Lagos should not display any valuables on the dashboard of their cars. “Do not accept any service of a hawker or a mobile artisan whom you are not sure of when driving as he may be a disguised burglar or rapist,’’ he said.

Nwosu also said that parents should not leave their children with strangers in public places and churches, adding that they should always lock the doors and windows before leaving their apartments. “When watching the television or listening to radio or entertaining your guests, the doors and windows should be locked,’’ he said.

Nwosu also advised that the public should not throw or leave their receipt behind after using the ATM as criminals could use it to access their bank accounts.

“Avoid carrying huge cash on transit; you may be preyed by miscreants who chance on such secrets.“Provide adequate security for cash in transit, including the use of police escort and also desist from keeping money or valuables inside your car,’’ he said. Nwosu said that the command had recovered over twelve cars suspected to be stolen during the month of March from different locations in Lagos.

He noted that curbing crime was a collective responsibility, stressing that the public should not relent in giving the police information about any suspicious persons. “Help the police to help you and let us join hands to rid our society of crime; it is a collective responsibility.

“Report any suspicious movement in your vicinity to the police and never confront a criminal as your life is very important. “Call the police on these numbers; Police control room 1 emergency/ distress call telephone numbers: 08060357795, 07035068242.

Others are Rapid Response Squad Control Room 2: 08065154338 or 07055462708 and 767, the toll free line,’’ he said.
