F/Eagles hit Hoffeinheim 5 – 2

Taiwo Awoniyi scored a second half hat-trick as the Flying Eagles thrashed Hoffenheim’s U23s 5-2 in their first friendly game in preparation for the Under-20 World Youth Championship.

Saviour Godwin got the Eagles off to a flying start but the Germans levelled things up after some poor defending from the Nigerians.

Chidera Ezeh restored Nigeria’s lead but the Germans once again restored parity as both teams head into half time break level at 2-2.

The second half got off to a slow start but the introduction of Nigeria Under-20 top striker Taiwo Awoniyi changed the complexion of the game.

He was introduced with 35 minutes left to play and the gangling forward proved his rating as one of Nigeria’s hottest teen prospect by firing a hat-trick to secure a 5-2 win for Nigeria.

Despite the heavy scoreline, Coach Manu Garba was unhappy that his boys let in two goals and made errors that he felt might hurt the team at the tournament proper.

“We deserved to win based on our performance but there is still room for improvement going forward we got it right but we made some mistakes in defending,” he said.

“Those errors might prove costly in the World Cup. I am hopeful we will get it right before our first game but overall, am pleased with the performances of the boys.”
