2015 Women’s W/Cup: African sides beaten

It was a disappointing match day for the three African representatives as they all succumbed to losses.

The Super Falcons were undone by Simon’s brace to give Australia a 2-0 win and increase their chance to make the next round. On the other hand, the African champions, who gave a good account of themselves in this game, face a do or die match against USA to stay alive in this competition.

Thailand responded to Ivory Coast’s early goal with three of their own, meaning that not even the late strike by their opponents would deny them a win. Ange scored Ivory Coast’s first ever goal at the Women’s World Cup but her side surrendered to three goals from the Thais. Josee scored in the 88th minute to reduce the deficit but it was not enough to earn them anything from the game. Nevertheless, it was a huge improvement from the 10 goal walloping by Germany.

World champions, Japan became the first side to reach the knockout round after a 2-1 win over Cameroon. The Japanese raced to an early two goal lead courtesy of Sameshama and Sugaswa, never letting up their hold on this game. Cameroon’s lionesses earned a late consolation from Nchout; they

are now level on points with Switzerland whom they face for an automatic last 16 spot.
